Welcome to Tatton Park
Tatton Park is one of the UK’s most complete historic estates. It is home to a Tudor Old Hall, Neo-Classical Mansion, 50 acres of landscaped gardens, a rare-breed farm and 1,000 acres of deer park. Our speciality shops, restaurant, adventure playground, events and educational programmes combine to make Tatton one of the most popular family days out in the North West.
The Old Hall was the estate manor house until the late 17th century, when work commenced on a new house. The Neo Classical Mansion, is celebrated for its Gillows furniture and collection of ceramics, paintings and books. The library collection is considered one of the finest in the National Trust.
50 acres of beautiful gardens reflect over 250 years of garden design.The gardens are renowned for their remarkable glasshouses, the Japanese Garden, considered the finest in Europe and the extensive Kitchen Gardens.
The working rare-breed farm is a must-see for our family visitors. Meet our rare breed cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry and donkeys and take part in themed events throughout the year.
Herds of Red and Fallow deer roam freely in 1,000 acres of parkland. The meres, woodlands and rough grassland provide a perfect habitat for wildlife. The parkland is a stunning setting for a leisurely stroll or high-octane cycle. Children adore the adventure playground.
Tatton hosts over 100 events a year including the RHS Flower Show, Summer Picnic Concerts with the Hallé Orchestra, car shows, antiques fairs and much more.
For nearly 400 years the estate was the property of the Egerton family until it was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1958. It is financed and maintained by Cheshire East Council.
Tatton Park was the winner of Cheshire’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2009 and 2010.

How to Get to Tatton Park
Where is Tatton Park?
Tatton Park is situated in the town of Knutsford, Cheshire in the North West of England and is easily accessible from major roads and railways with good public transport links to Knutsford. It is just 20 miles from Manchester and 30 miles from Chester.
Parking is available inside the Knutsford Entrance of Tatton Park and at the Old Hall with the main parking area near Tatton Park’s Mansion and Stableyard area. The map of Tatton Park details the car parks. Coaches can enter Tatton Park for free and visitors with disabilities who show a blue badge can enter for half price. Public Transport to Tatton Park
Knutsford Railway Station is situated half a mile from the Knutsford Entrance to Tatton Park. It is a further two mile walk down the estate drive to the Mansion and Stableyard area where the Garden entrance is located along with Tatton’s speciality shops and Stables Restaurant.
Local bus services are available to Knutsford including the number 27 from Macclesfield, 288 from Altrincham via Wilmslow and 289 from Northwich to Altrincham.
Visit Tatton Park on a Rainy Day
Tatton’s variety of attractions, shops and restaurants make it the perfect choice for a`trip out’ regardless of the weather. You can safely make arrangements to visit knowing that there will be plenty to enjoy, no matter how the weather turns out!
Tatton’s parkland and adventure playground is accessible every day in high season (beginning of April to end of October) and every day except Mondays during low season.
Entrance to the Garden and four of Tatton’s shops – Housekeeper’s Store, Garden, Gift and Tuck Shops (Tuck Shop closed low season) – are located in the Stableyard. The shops, gardens and restaurant are open every day except Monday in low season.
A vist to Tatton Park’s Mansion visit is ideal on a wetter day and most of Tatton’s Farm’s attractions can be enjoyed under cover. Both are open every day except Monday in high season and the Farm is open every weekend during low season and February school holidays. The Mansion and Farm also open for Christmas activities.
Tatton Park’s events programme includes over 100 events, many indoors and not weather dependant.

Tatton Park’s Mansion
Set amidst more than 50 acres of Tatton Park gardens, at the heart of 1,000 acres of landscaped parkland, the elegant Mansion house at Tatton Park sits in an elevated position. The impressive portico of the South Front dominates the view of the house from the parkland.
From the turn of the 18th century the Egerton family made a home on this site. An earlier house was extensively re-modelled in the Neo-Classical style, between 1780 and 1813 by the architects Samuel Wyatt (1737-1807) and Lewis William Wyatt (1777–1853). The rich furnishings of the Tatton Park mansion and its important collection of paintings and books reflect the growing wealth and status of the Egerton family at the end of the 18th and during the 19th centuries. The mansion houses one of the National Trust’s finest libraries and an outstanding collection of Gillow’s of Lancaster furniture. Add to this the extensive array of domestic offices and servants’ quarters and the Mansion offers a complete view of life in days gone by.
Tatton Park has recently embarked on a project with the Family History Society of Cheshire to document historical information about the hundreds of people who worked and lived at Tatton Park throughout the Egerton family’s ownership. Tatton Park Mansion Exhibitions
Throughout the year Tatton Park hosts a number of exhibitions in the Mansion reflecting a particular aspect of the Park and its rich history. The permanent Maurice Egerton exhibition details fascinating facts about the life and interests of Maurice Egerton, the last Baron Egerton of Tatton Park.
Tatton Park New Library Re-Display
Visitors to the mansion can now experience reading and relaxing in the Egerton family library. A large area of the Library has been re-displayed with sofas and furniture from the collection to allow our visitors, young and old, to sit and read a number of specially purchased books which are relevant to the collection and period.
An iPad is also available for visitors to access some classic novels and digitised versions of some special books in our collection. The library re-interpretation is an ongoing project which will be supported by talks, workshops and tours in due course. The project has been part-funded by Tatton Park Trust.
Tatton Living History Society
The Tatton Park Living History Society are a friendly group of volunteers who create a Victorian atmosphere within the Mansion at Tatton Park. Meeting on two Sundays a month, the group create their own costumes, portraying both servants and gentry, to bring the mid 1890s to life. Today it is an almost complete picture of how the gardens existed in Edwardian times. The Old Hall at Tatton Park
Tatton Park Old Hall brief history
If Tatton Park is a jewel in the crown of Cheshire, then the Old Hall is its hidden gem. The building stands near the diappeared Tatton village whose humps and hollows show where houses once stood. The site is a `Scheduled Ancient Monument’ considered an area of significant historical and archaeological importance in the North West.
Once the heart of the estate, Tatton Park’s Old Hall survives as its oldest building, and a costumed guided tour takes you on an evocative journey through its history as a dwelling place – from manor house to humble cottages.
Built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, the single storey great hall, dimly lit by tallow candle and flickering fire still retains the shadowy atmosphere of Tudor times.
Tatton Park’s Old Hall Today
As featured on TV’s Most Haunted the Old Hall is the venue for historical re-enactments and is host to many of Tatton Park’s events such as the busy travelling Medieval Fayre, or summer outdoor theatre. It provides the perfect setting for Halloween Hauntings.
Education days at Tatton Park also benefit from this unique setting. The Old Hall welcomes children and there is always an element of ‘hands on’ history for them. Tatton’s visitors often say that a tour of the Old Hall is both enjoyable and informative with recommendations for others to follow in their footsteps to explore Tatton’s hidden gem.

Tatton Park’s Parkland
Tatton Park’s 2,000 acres of landscaped deer park, woodland, meres and farmland make up the Tatton estate of which 1,000 acres are open to the public for exploring by bike, on foot or on horseback. The appearance of the parkland today owes much to the ideas of the landscape architect Humphrey Repton (1752-1818) though there is evidence of habitation here during the Stone Age.
A deer park since 1290, Tatton’s parkland is now home to herds of Red and Fallow deer which roam freely in the wide open spaces. Rare breed St Kilda and Soay sheep have also been a feature here since 1887 and the 1930s respectively, and every season brings its own rich variety of birds and wildlife.
What to do in Tatton’s Parkland
The two Meres at Tatton Park not only provide a valuable wetland habitat for resident and migrating birds but are also used for fishing and sailing and the surrounding areas provide a perfect setting for picnics. Today the parkland is also utilised as an educational resource with environmental school programmes from March through to October and Tatton Park ranger-led nature walks. Beautiful scenery and outdoor spaces are abundant in Cheshire’s Peak District which includes the world renowned Peak District National Park within its 100 square miles. The area also includes the Gritstone Trail, a 35 mile walking route taking in wild moorland, rocky outcrops, impressive peaks and breathtaking scenery.

Parking
Drop off zone for disabled passengers and limited blue badge holder spaces are available in the Stableyard car park, close to the Mansion and Gardens. Blue badge holder spaces are available in the main car park with level tarmac/flagstone access to Stableyard (200m). Blue badge parking is available close to the Farm and Old Hall (by prior arrangement). Provision is made for nearest available areas for large parkland events/shows.
Accessible Toilets
There are accessible toilets available in the Stableyard and at Knutsford Entrance. Toilets are also available at the Old Hall and Home Farm during attraction opening times. There is tarmac access at the Stableyard and a paved approach path to the toilets at Home Farm.
Wheelchair Loan
Electric buggies (Gardens only) and manual wheelchairs are available for loan when visiting our attractions. They are only available for use in the attraction they are hired from (ie they cannot be used to move between attractions and in the Parkland). Wheelchair loan for the Gardens and Mansion can be pre-arranged in advance of your visit (subject to availability). Please telephone to make a booking: 01625 374400. Deposit required.
Visually Impaired
Braille and large print guides are available for the Mansion and Gardens.
Hearing Impaired
‘Mobile’ hearing loop systems are available for the Mansion, Old Hall and Farm by prior arrangement. Education rooms in the Stable area and Home Farm have static hearing loops.
Assistance Dogs
Assistance dogs are allowed in all areas of the estate both inside and outside.
Stableyard
This area gives access to the Mansion, Gardens, Shops, Restaurant and Toilets. Flagged pathways have been laid to avoid cobbled areas. Wheelchair friendly picnic tables are located in this area.
Shops and Restaurant
All Tatton’s shops and Stables Restaurant are fully accessible to wheelchair users.
Mansion
There is access to the Mansion for people with mobility difficulties by means of a ramp. Visitors can request access to the ramp from Mansion Assistants. There is then level access around the entire first floor of the Mansion and all state rooms can be viewed. Wheelchairs can be pre-booked or provided on request (subject to availability). The upper level of the Mansion can only be accessed by stairs.
A stair climber is available operated by Mansion Assistants. There is a maximum weight limit of 120kg (approx 19 stone) for use of this facility. If you would like to use this facility please telephone 01625 374446 or 01625 374400 to book in advance as it is dependant on availability of staff. Please note that carers will have to assist in transfer from wheelchair to stair climber and back.
For those not wishing to go upstairs there is a photograph album of the upstairs rooms. Pushchairs should not be brought in to the Mansion – they can be left in the lodge directly opposite the main door and visitors will be offered one of the baby carriers that we can provide.
Gardens
The Gardens at Tatton Park cover an area of 50 acres. The routes to the main show gardens are paved with compacted gravel which facilitates access for people using wheelchairs. Path gradients are within the recommended limits. Ramp to entrance, step-free access to most areas. Steps to formal and rose garden. Please note only assistance dogs are allowed in the formal gardens.
Home Farm
The farm is maintained as a 1930s farm and, as such, retains the features of a farmyard. The yard is predominantly cobbled which makes access more problematic. Work is continuing to introduce a wheelchair and buggy friendly network of paths into the historic cobble stone surfaces, which should be completed in 2011/12. Once stone steps up to the entrances have been negotiated, the cattle, donkey and pig sheds can be accessed easily across smooth, level floors. There is ramp access to the lower level of farm cottage but upper levels are inaccessible to wheelchair users.
The farm is a working farm and the real sights and smells of the farm can be appreciated during the visit. Animals can be handled by prior arrangement and goats/poultry can be fed on a daily basis. Farm contact telephone: 01625 374431.
Old Hall
Visits take the form of a guided tour and staff will discuss the site with people with mobility difficulties who may not be able to visit the whole site. There is a grassy surface between entrance and Old Hall. There is level access to ground floor rooms (beginning and end of tour), ramp into reception area and barn. There are steep steps to upper floor and low lighting in some parts.
Parkland
• Children’s Play Area: We have a large and varied children’s play area that has seen the installation of new integrated play equipment some of which is purpose built for wheelchair users. The play area is fully accessible for wheelchair users and has tarmac pathways.
• Pedestrian gates in the parkland are accessible for wheelchairs
• Bird Hide: The new bird hide, introduced in 2011, is fully accessible with a wheelchair ramp and a wheelchair viewing bay.
Conferences, banqueting & Meeting Rooms
Conference and banqueting facilities are accessible to all users. One meeting room in the Mansion requires the use of stair climbers to access.
Self-Catering Cottage
Our on-site self-catering cottage is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
Admission Prices
There is a reduced car park rate for disabled vehicles.
We do not offer any concessionary rates for attractions but will admit one helper free when this is necessary to allow full enjoyment of the visit.

Tatton Park welcomes groups of all ages and interests. Whether you have a full day or a half day to spend at our estate, we can organise an itinerary to make the most of your time here.
The 1000 acres of parkland are home to two herds of deer which you should be able to glimpse from your coach on arrival. There are four attractions to choose from – the Mansion, Gardens, Farm and Old Hall and a choice of speciality shops to enjoy browsing in. The Stables Restaurant offers food using local ingredients including those from the Tatton estate and welcomes groups for coffees, lunches or afternoon teas.
Please note that in order to qualify for the discounted rates available to groups and to benefit from our Meet and Greet service then your visit must be pre-booked. A group is classed as 12 or more people. We recommend four or more hours if you are visiting all of our attractions, or three hours if you are just visiting the Mansion and Gardens, which still leaves time for refreshments in the Restaurant.
